Joseph Allen

Joseph ALLEN was born about 1799, probably in North Carolina. His relationship to Arthur ALLEN of Union Co., Ill., is not known, but it is believed they were related. Joseph ALLEN came to Illinois from Alabama about 1839, and was living in Alabama at least as early as 1820, when his oldest son was born there. Joseph ALLEN is not the head of a household on the 1830 census of Alabama as a free person of color. There are Joseph ALLENs who were listed on the census as white and living in Fayette County, Lauderdale County and Marengo County in 1830.

Joseph ALLEN is listed as a free person of color on the 1840 census of Shawnee Township, Gallatin Co., Ill. (p 7). Joseph patented land there on 26 Oct 1840, the west half of the northeast quarter of section 7, township 10 south, range 6 east, 80 acres, for $100. Joseph's children, John, Joseph, Thomas, Nancy, Elizabeth and Telitha, sold their shares of this land to their brother, Asberry ALLEN for $200 on 20 Mar 1867 (Book Q page 45).

Joseph and his family lived in the part of Gallatin County which became Saline County in 1847 and were early settlers near Lake View. The History of Saline County (1997) states that "Lake View, a colored community south of town (Carrier Mills), is an older settlement than Carrier Mills. A union church where all denominations were welcome was established there in 1850 and its founders were free Negroes who came into this county before the Civil War, namely the families of Joseph COLE, Zachariah TABORN, Kimber TABORN, John MITCHELL, and the ALLENs, EVANSes and BLACKWELL families." Most of these settlers are buried in Lake View Cemetery which is adjacent to Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Saline Co., Ill. Saline County A Century of History (1947) stated "The first church in Lake View south of Carrier Mills was a log building erected on an acre of ground given by Byrd TABORN for a union burying ground. Ministers of any denomination were welcome to preach whenever one was in that vicinity."

Joseph ALLEN married Sarah FROME (or FROUSE or FOUSE or Sarah F. ROUSE) sometime before 1839, as the marriage license of Thomas ALLEN lists his parents as Joseph and Sarah FROME ALLEN and Thomas was born about 1839 in Alabama.

Joseph died in May or June 1847, in Gallatin Co., Ill. James JACKSON was appointed administrator of his estate (Box 1) and later married Joseph's widow. Joseph ALLEN's personal property was appraised by David B. RUSSELL, Thompson HARRIS and Blinford CARRIER on 18 Jun 1847. Debts in the estate file included one for $5 due David B. RUSSELL for "one fine kase led coffin." Zackeriah TABIN was also paid $1 "in full of all demands up to the 25 of February 1850."

Sarah, Joseph's widow, purchased the southwest quarter of the southeast quarter of section 35, township 9 south, range 5 east, 40 acres, for $63.69 from James A. and Mahuldah (ARNOLD) HARRIS on 16 Jan 1849 (Deed Book D page 7). HARRIS was the founder of Harrisburg, which was named in his honor. Sarah was deceased by 1865, when her children, Joseph, Elizabeth and Nancy, sold their interest in her 40 acres to their brother, Thomas ALLEN, for $155 on 12 May 1865 (Deed Book H page 501).

In Saline County, Sarah ALLEN and James JACKSON were charged with fornication and arrested. On 21 Oct 1854, their bail was set at $300 each (Circuit Court Book A page 393). The jury, consisting of Samuel J. BARGER, William STRICKLIN, Lawson B. WOODARD, George P. KEITH, Michael SOUERHEAVER, Thomas COOK, William D. VAUGHN, Jonathon ABNEY, John D. CUMMINS, James R. LOWE, William HAMMON and Calvin S. BLACKMAN, found them not guilty. Sarah married James JACKSON after the death of Joseph ALLEN, but the marriage record has not been located. After Sarah died, James JACKSON married on 4 Nov 1863, in Saline Co., Ill., Nancy MITCHELL. James JACKSON died 1 Jan 1868, and Thomas ALLEN and Charles MITCHELL were appointed guardians of his minor children: Benjamin Franklin JACKSON, Sarah Ellen JACKSON and Larkin JACKSON.

Benjamin F. JACKSON, the son of James and Sarah JACKSON, married Amaline Alice ALLEN, a granddaughter of Arthur and Patience ALLEN and their family is recorded in chapter 1.

Sarah Ellen JACKSON, the daughter of James and Sarah JACKSON, was born about 1860 and was named as a half sister of Thomas ALLEN in his will. Sarah married on 19 Oct 1879, in Saline Co., Ill., Jesse EVANS, who was born about 1859, the son of Richard EVANS. Jesse and Sarah's son, Herbert EVANS, was born about 1884 and married on 17 May 1915, in White Co., Ill., Mary CHAVOUS, who was born about 1896, the daughter of Elick (William Andrew?) and Lethia Ann TABOURN CHAVOUS. Lethia Ann was the daughter of Zachariah TABOURN.

The children of Joseph ALLEN:

1. John ALLEN, was born about 1820 in Alabama and married on 13 Oct 1842, in Gallatin Co., Ill., Caira "Carrie" TABORN, who was born about 1820 in North Carolina.

They are the only African American ALLENs on the 1850 census of Saline County (household 135). On the 1850 agricultural census, John was recorded as having 15 improved acres and 25 acres of unimproved acres, his farm being valued at $100. His farm implements were worth $5. He owned one horse, one milch cow and 20 swine, the value of all his livestock being $50. He had 250 bushels of Indian corn and 20 pounds of butter.

John and Carrie are on the 1860 (household 1536) and 1870 (household 263) censi of Saline Co., Ill.

John patented the northwest quarter of the southwest quarter of section 7, township 10 south, range 6 east, 45.21 acres on 2 Apr 1850, for $56.51. John died between 1870 and 1876 and Carrie is on the 1880 census living in the household of John's half brother, Thomas ALLEN in Saline Co., Ill. (household 134).

a. Simeon ALLEN was on the 1850 census with John and Carrie ALLEN as a 4-year-old boy. He is thought to have died young, as the census is the only known record of him.

b. Willis ALLEN was born 15 Aug 1850, in Saline Co., Ill., and married on 9 Apr 1874, in Saline Co., Ill., Elvira ALLEN, who was born 22 May 1848, in North Carolina, the daughter of Johnson ALLEN. Willis died 12 Mar 1930, and Elvira died 3 Feb 1919. Both were buried in Lake View Cemetery. Elvira's death record in Saline County states she died of tuberculosis on 4 Feb 1919, and that she was the daughter of Elvera ALLEN (Death Record Book 5 page 131). It incorrectly records her year of birth as 1850, but since she was 2 years old on the 1850, she was most likely born in 1848.

Willis's death certificate in Saline County states he was born 30 May 1850, in Illinois and died 21 Mar 1930, of "mitral regurtation chronic inter sulial nephritis and dropsy" (Death Book 8 page 171). Since he is not on the 1850 census, his 15 Aug 1850, birthdate is probably more correct.

On the 1910 census of Independence Township, Saline Co., Ill., Elvira's name is incorrectly recorded as Olivia (household 260).

Elvira was previously married to Jeff TABORN, but they were divorced in 1871. Her children by that marriage were Gus TABORN, Abe TABORN and Lizzie TABORN.

Willis ALLEN is listed in the "Prairie Farmer's Reliable Directory of Farms" in Saline County. Willis owned 5 acres in section 7, Independence Township and had lived in Saline County since 1849, according to the directory.

Willis and Elvira were members of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Elvira was a charter member.

(1) John "Johnnie" ALLEN was born in January 1876 in Saline Co., Ill. and drowned 13 May 1918, in Saline Co., Ill. (Death Book 5 page 19). He was single, a farmer and was buried in Lake View Cemetery. His death certificate records his father's name as Willis ALLEN, however he is not named as a child of Willis in the "Prairie Farmer's Reliable Directory of Farms" in Saline County. He was living with Willis in 1910.

(2) Arthur C. ALLEN was born in February 1879 and married on 12 Mar 1902, in Saline Co., Ill., Rosa RUSSELL, the daughter of Oliver and Catharine "Cassie" COLE RUSSELL.

Oliver C. RUSSELL was born 18 Apr 1847, and died 30 Jun 1911. He was a Civil War soldier in the 28th U.S. Colored Infantry. William H. BROADEY, who is also buried in Lake View Cemetery , served as a corporal in the same regiment. Oliver RUSSELL moved to Lakeview in1894 from near Pinkstaff, Lawrence Co., Ill. He was the grandfather of Jewell RUSSELL COFIELD, author of Memories of Lakeview. She wrote that he was a farmer and carpenter and built many houses and buildings in his area. In addition to Rosa, their children were : Earl "Bud" (married Ruthena CHAVIS), Maude (married Harry TAYLOR), Addie (married Harve TABORN), Arnett (married Violett DABBS--parents of Jewell COFIELD), Lemuel (married Pearl ANDERSON), Commadore, and Maria (married Tom SOUTHALL).

Arthur was a coal miner living in ward 2 of Carrier Mills in 1920 (household 205). His wife was Lucy, who was born about 1895 in Illinois. Lucy had two children from a previous marriage who were living with her and Arthur in 1920: Iva O. ROUSE, who was born about 1913, and Paul V. ROUSE, who was born about 1916.

(3) Moses ALLEN was born in August 1879 or 1880 in Saline Co., Ill., and married Hazel WILLIAMS, who was born about 1897 in Saline (or White) Co., Ill. Moses was a coal miner in Saline Co., Ill., in 1920 (household 35). They lived in Independence Township.

(a) Mary ALLEN was born 3 Dec 1911, in Carrier Mills, Saline Co., Ill., and died 3 Dec 1914, in Carrier Mills from accidental burns (Death Book 3 page 233). She was buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery. There is a marker in Mt. Zion for Mary Aria Ettia ALLEN, born 25 Aug 1911, and died 31 Dec 1914, aged 3 years, 4 months and 6 days.

(b) Shirley ALLEN was born about 1911.

(c) Lewialan "Lillie" ALLEN was born about 1914 in Illinois.

(d) Lewis ALLEN was born about 1916 in Illinois.

(e) William Howard ALLEN was born 1 Oct 1918, in Saline Co., Ill., and died 19 Feb 1921, of measles, bronchial pneumonia and peritonitis (Death Book 5 page 537). His marker has his birth as 15 Nov 1917, and his death as 18 Feb 1921.

(f) Damon ALLEN was born 5 May 1925, in Saline Co., Ill., died 23 Dec 1930, of bronchial pneumonia and was buried in Lake View Cemetery (Death Book 8 page 287).

(4) Carrie ALLEN was born in December 1882 and married on 18 Oct 1903, in Saline Co., Ill., J.L. WEBB, born about 1870 in Mississippi, the son of David and ? NEALY WEBB.

(5) Earnest ALLEN was born in February 1884.

2. Asberry "Berry" ALLEN was born about 1822 in Tennessee and married on 24 Nov 1853, in Gallatin Co., Ill., Mary "Polly" WORLDS, who was born about 1832 in Tennessee, the daughter of Henry and Jane WORLDS.

On 6 Nov 1852, Asberry purchased from James A. and Huldah (ARNOLD) HARRIS, for $100 the north half of the southeast quarter of section 12, township 10 south, range 5 east, 80 acres (Deed Book 4 page 6). Asberry sold this on 5 Jan 1856, to Joseph COLE for $500 (Deed Book 4 page 354).

Asberry bought on 25 Mar 1854, from Aaron and Sarah ARNOLD, for $50, the northeast quarter of the southeast quarter of section 7, township 10 south, range 6 east, 40 acres (Deed Book 4 page 12).

Asberry married on 21 Apr 1862, in Saline Co., Ill.,Susan Christina "Sueky" MITCHELL, who was born about 1850 in Illinois.

Asberry was a farmer, living alone in Saline Co., Ill., in 1860 (household 1539). His real estate was worth $500 and his personal property was worth $550.

Asberry purchased from John W. MITCHELL on 10 Oct 1861, for $240, 90.4 acres in the northwest quarter of the northwest quarter and the southeast quarter of the northwest quarter of section 7, township 10 south, range 6 east (Deed Book H page 77).

Asberry died 28 Nov 1869, in Saline Co., Ill. He is buried in Lake View Cemetery in Saline County. Zachariah TABORN was appointed administrator of Asberry's estate and made $1,200 bond with John ALLEN and Sueky ALLEN as securities (Box 5-32). Asberry's land was the north half of the southeast quarter of section 7, 80 acres, worth $700; the south half of the northeast quarter of section 12, 80 acres worth $800; the northwest quarter of the northwest quarter and the southeast quarter of the northwest quarter of section 7, 90 acres worth $400; all in township 6 south, range 6 east; and the south half of the northeast quarter of section 12, township 10 south, range 5 east, 80 acres worth $800.

The southeast quarter of the northeast quarter of section 7, township 10 south, range 6 east, 40 acres, was sold to R.N. ALLEN on 6 Jul1870. The court ordered the land to be sold to pay the debts of the estate of Asberry ALLEN.

Asberry saw that his daughter, Penny, was educated, as one bill in his estate papers is dated 21 Mar 1870, from a teacher, Charles H. MATSEL (MITCHELL?), for $3 "for teaching one child three months in school."

Among the debts which remained due Asberry at his death were notes from Gilford ALLEN for $16.20, Joseph ALLEN for $27 and $17, and Charles MITCHELL for $50.

In 1870, Christeny ALLEN and her daughter, Penny, are living alone in Saline County (household 264). Her real estate was worth $2,500 and her personal property was worth $1,200. Christina remarried on 27 Mar 1873, in Saline Co., Ill., George W. TURNER, born about 1852. They are on the 1880 census of White Co., Ill. (household 453). Lazarus ALLEN, born about 1873, was living with them. The father of Lazarus is not known, but he may be a son of Christina.

Christina died 2 Aug 1881, in White Co., Ill.

a. Penny ALLEN was born in February 1865 in Saline Co., Ill., and married on 21 Nov 1880, in White Co., Ill., Cyrus SHAW, who was born about 1856, the son of Cornelius and Sarah SHAW SHAW.

(1) Alice SHAW was born about 1881 in White Co., Ill. She lived in Murphysboro, Jackson Co., Ill., when she married there on 28 Sep 1901, Stephen Andrew BLACKWELL, the son of John William and Clementine TURNER BLACKWELL, who was born 17 Feb 1878, in Mt. Pleasant, Union Co., Ill. (Birth Register 1 page 9), and lived in White County in 1887. Witnesses to the marriage ceremony were Mary DORSEY and Robert BLACKWELL.

Stephen was living in Carmi when he sold his interest in the northeast quarter of the northwest quarter of section 23, township 12 south, range 1 east, on 3 Mar 1898, to W.J. JENNETT of Mt. Pleasant for $50 (Book 46 page 403). He was single and living with his mother and brother in Saline Co., Ill., in 1910. His occupation was recorded as coal miner.

3. Rebecca ALLEN was born about 1827 in Alabama and married on 29 Dec 1847, in Saline Co., Ill., John ALLEN, who was born 1825-26 in North Carolina, the son of Arthur and Patience HAWLEY ALLEN (see Arthur ALLEN family history in chapter 1).

4. Gilford ALLEN was also born about 1831 in Alabama and was living in the household of Patience HAWLEY ALLEN in Union County in 1850. He is not named in the will of his brother Thomas ALLEN, probably because he preceded Thomas in death and left no children. Gilford ALLEN married on 11 Nov 1855, in White Co., Ill., Mary E. ALLEN. He appears on the 1870 census of White Co., Ill., (household 202/206) with his wife, Mary ALLEN, who was born about 1833 in Tennessee. Also with them were 13-year-old Mary RUDD and 10-year-old niece Mary WORLDS, both born in Illinois. In 1872 and 1875 Edwin BUCKNER filed suit against Guilford to foreclose on a mortgage (boxes 223, 279). Gilford died in White County 3 May 1876, and George W. CLINE was appointed administrator of his estate (Box 157). His personal estate was appraised at $276.50 and was given to his widow as the law required. His land included the southeast quarter of the southeast quarter, the northeast quarter of the northeast quarter, the southeast quarter of the northeast quarter, and the northeast quarter of the southeast quarter of section 11, township 5, range 11. The northeast quarter of the northeast quarter of section 11 and the southeast quarter of the southwest quarter of section 2, township 6, range 11, were sold in October 1877 for $1,000 to pay the debts of the estate. Among the debts were $16.95 for burial clothes, $15 for a coffin and case, $11 for doctor visit and medicine from Arnold C. TAYLOR and $24.25 for doctor visit and medicine from 1869 to 1876 from D. NEWELL. Included in the debt due Dr. NEWELL was $9.50, which was an old account of Widow WORLDS which Gilford had assumed. Widow WORLDS was Jane WORLDS, the widow of Henry WORLDS, and she is thought to have been Gilford's mother-in-law.

The heirs of Gilford ALLEN were Mary E. ALLEN, Oran ALLEN, Thomas ALLEN, Joseph ALLEN, Betsy MITCHELL, Nancy BROADEN, Penny ALLEN, John WILLIAMS, Willis ALLEN, Isaac ALLEN, Eliza J. ALLEN, Norcena ALLEN, Angeline RUDD, and the unknown heirs of Hyliard ALLEN.

On the 1880 census, Mary ALLEN is head of the household and listed as a widow in the White County census (household 269/280). Mary WORLDS and Adeline RUDD were still living with her, as were 4-year-old Berthena RUDD (married on 19 Jun 1894, in White Co., Ill., William H. CUNNINGHAM), Calvin ALLEN, who was born about 1857 in Kentucky (both his parents were born in Tennessee), and Henry WORLDS, who was born about 1859 in Indiana (both parents were born in Tennessee).

There is some reason to believe that Gilford's wife was Mary WORLDS ALLEN, who had been married to his brother, Asberry ALLEN and then divorced. No divorce record has been found, however. It is also possible that Gilford ALLEN's wife was born Mary ALLEN and is the same person as Mrs. Mary Alice ALLEN, who was born about 1840 and married on 3 Apr 1889, in White Co., Ill., Carroll STEWART, of Wilson Co., Tenn., who was born about 1843, the son of James and Sally MANLEY STEWART. The marriage license records that Mary Alice was the daughter of Henry and Jane POWELS ALLEN. Carroll STEWART married in 1892 Marcilla (COLLINS) MANLEY, who had been married to Washington MANLEY, who she married in Wilson Co., Tenn., in 1865. Carroll STEWART was a half brother of Washington MANLEY and Jeremiah Porter MANLEY who married Susan BLACKWELL in White Co., Ill. James STEWART married Sally MANLEY in Wilson Co., Tenn., on 12 Mar 1842. Sally is thought to have been the widow of David MANLEY, Jeremiah's father who died about 1840, and her maiden name was COLLINS. She descends from a large family of free blacks who were in Wilson Co., Tenn., by 1820 and are thought to have settled there from Wake Co., N.C. Sally may be the daughter of Jerry COLLINS. There are also many MANLEYs in Northampton County, North Carolina, beginning with Benjamin MANLEY on the 1810 census with eight free persons of color. There is a Jerry MANLEY who served in Co. F, 28th U.S. Colored Troops during the Civil War and may be the same person as Jeremiah. David MANLEY is the son of Joseph and Frances "Franky" (NICKENS) MANLEY of North Carolina.

Another ALLEN family living in White Co., Ill., from which Gilford's wife may have come was that of Minor and Lucinda MANCHESTER (or EENWINTER) ALLEN. Minor was born about 1830 in Virginia and Lucinda was born about 1835 in Kentucky and were on the 1880 census of Carmi, White Co., Ill. (household 459/507). Children of Minor ALLEN, all born in Kentucky, were Matilda born about 1853, James M. born about 1854, Marshall born about 1856 (married on 3 Jun 1906, in White Co., Ill., Emma SUGGS, born about 1880, the daughter of Calvin and Betty CHAPMAN LILY), Morgan born about 1857 (married on 28 Dec 1882, in White Co., Ill., Fanny WALKER), and Minnie born about 1864. In Carmi Cemetery, White Co., Ill., is a military marker for Miner ALLEN, who served in Co. A, 120th Regiment, United States Colored Troops, during the Civil War. It is not known if there is a family connection between the families of Minor ALLEN of White County, Arthur ALLEN of Union County and Joseph ALLEN of Alabama and Saline County, but one seems likely.

5. Telitha "Letha" ALLEN was born about 1835 in Alabama, and married on 9 Apr 1853, in Saline Co., Ill., Thomas WILLIAMS, who was born about 1810 in Tennessee.

Thomas WILLIAMS was a carpenter and he and his family are on the 1860 census of Saline Co., Ill. (household 1537) and owned no land, but his personal property was valued at $50. He was married before marrying Telitha. Children by an earlier marriage included: Abigail WILLIAMS, who was born about 1846 in Tennessee and married on 12 Mar 1862, in Saline Co., Ill., Simon TABORN (Abigail divorced him in 1870 in Saline Co., Ill., for adultery with "diverse lude women of the baser sort") ; Sarah J. WILLIAMS, who was born about 1848 in Tennessee; and Georgiana C. WILLIAMS, who was born about 1851 in Tennessee and married on 24 Dec 1868, in Saline Co., Ill., Joseph ROUSE, who was born about 1849 in Wilson Co., Tenn., perhaps the son of Ezekiel ROUSE in whose household (831) he was living in 1850 in Wilson Co., Tennn. Ezekiel ROUSE married on 14 Jan 1835, in Wilson Co., Tenn., Elizabeth "Betsy" JENKINS, with John STEWART as bondsman.

a. Nancy B. WILLIAMS was born about 1856 in Illinois and married on 9 Jun 1872, in Saline Co., Ill., Caleb TABORN. They were not located on the 1880 census of Saline County. Nancy was not named as one of the heirs of her uncle, Gilford ALLEN's estate in 1876 and may have been deceased.

b. John T. WILLIAMS was born in 1859 in Williamson Co., Ill., married on 22 Mar 1881, Amanda Jane ALLEN (see Arthur ALLEN family in chapter 1).

6. Thomas ALLEN was born about 1839 in Alabama (see Arthur ALLEN family in chapter 1).

7. Joseph ALLEN was born about 1840 in Illinois and married on 18 Apr 1861, in Saline Co., Ill., Martha MITCHELL. Martha died and Joseph married again on 2 Nov 1876, in Williamson Co., Ill., Mrs. Frances "Fannie" WILEY, who was born about 1840 in Missouri. They were married by Andrew BROWN, an elder in the Baptist Church.

Fannie was previously married and had the following children by that marriage: Lucy WILEY, who was born about 1857; Manuel WILEY, who was born about 1861; and John T. WILEY, who was born about 1863.

Joseph was named as one of the heirs of his half brother, Gilford ALLEN. In the probate file is the following letter.

W.H. PEARCE clk Dear Sir I find a colored man named Joseph ALLEN, who says he has a half brother in White Co. named Gilford ALLEN. I suppose him to be the man named in the summons and have served the summons on him. I do not know any other Joseph ALLEN in our county.

Joseph and Fannie are on the 1880 census of Williamson Co., Ill. He was a farmer.

a. Rebecca Elizabeth ALLEN was born about 1861 in Illinois and married on 13 Jun 1878, in Williamson Co., Ill., Francis GRAY, who was born about 1850, the son of John and Minerva BIRD GRAY. Francis was a farmer in Marion, Williamson Co., Ill., when they married. Rebecca's father gave his consent to the marriage, which was performed by T.J. DAVIS, a minister of the gospel.

John GRAY was born about 1823 in Illinois and is listed as a mechanic on the 1850 census of Williamson Co., Ill. (household 63). His wife in 1850 was Manerva BIRD, who was born about 1828 in Ohio. Their children were John W., born about 1845 in Illinois, Leonard, born about 1848 in Illinois, and Reuben, born in 1850 in Illinois. John GRAY married 2nd on 30 Apr 1857, in Franklin Co., Ill., Adeline ALLEN, a daughter of Johnson ALLEN.

b. Victory ALLEN was born about 1862 in Illinois.

(1) Laura ALLEN was born in 1880 in Williamson Co., Ill. She is listed with Joseph ALLEN's family in 1880 census. She maried on 1 Sep 1895, in Saline Co., Ill., Robert KEENE, born about 1866 in Illinois, the son of Sol and Nancy (GAINES) KEENE.

c. William T. ALLEN was born about 1864 in Illinois.

d. P.A. ALLEN (female) was born about 1865 in Illinois.

e. M.A. ALLEN (male) was born about 1867 in Illinois.

f. Roy ALLEN was born about 1870 in Illinois.

g. Sarah M. ALLEN was born about 1873 in Illinois.

h. Luiza A. ALLEN was born about 1878 in Illinois.

8. Elizabeth A. "Betsy" ALLEN was born about 1842 in Illinois and married about 1865 Robert CHAVERS, who was born about 1848 in Tennessee. They are on the 1870 census of Saline Co., Ill. (household 272) where Robert was a farmer. This is probably the same person as Robert CHAVIS, who was the son of Thomas and Dicey CHAVIS of Union Co., Ill. Robert died between 1870 and 1874 and Elizabeth married again on 6 Nov 1874, in Saline Co., Ill., John MITCHELL, who was born in 1857 and was living in 1870 in Saline Co., Ill., with his mother, Sina ALLEN (household 265). They are all on the 1880 census of Saline Co., Ill. (household 523). Sina ALLEN is probably the ex-wife of Johnson ALLEN.

Elizabeth died before 1900 and John MITCHELL is listed as a widower on that census (household 247).

c. Thomas MITCHEL was born about 1873.

d. Mary MITCHEL was born about 1875.

9. Nancy ALLEN was born in July 1844 in Illinois and married on 23 Jul 1869, in Saline Co., Ill., Edward BROADEN (or BROUGHTON), who was born in January 1850 in Alabama. In 1900, they lived in Carrier Mills, Saline Co., Ill., (household 3). Their grandson, Raymond BROTEN (or MANLY), born in January 1896, lived with them in 1900 and 1910 (household 480). In 1910 the census recorded that Nancy was the mother of nine children of whom three were living.

a. Ben BROTTEN was born about 1873 in Harrisburg, Saline Co., Ill. He married on 30 Jan 1901, at Verlinda TABORN's house in Saline Co., Ill., Minnie B. SCOTT, who was born about 1884 in Evansville, Ind., the daughter of James and Emeline TABORN SCOTT. Ben was a coal miner. Ben's wife died before 1910 and he is listed on the 1910 census as a widower, living with his parents (household 480).

Verlinda TABORN (1820-1905), known as "Grandma Lindy," is described in Jewell COFIELD's book, Memories of Lakeview, as the matriarch of the TABORN family. Her maiden name was Verlinda COLE, the daughter of Joseph and Ann COLE, and she married Caswell TABORN. She was midwife and doctor.

b. Anderson BROTTEN was born in March 1877

c. Helen BROADEN was born about 1882 and lived with her parents in 1910, as did Helen's son, Sherman.

(1) Sherman BROADEN was born about 1905.

10. Hyliard ALLEN

Among the heirs of Gilford ALLEN in 1876 were the "unknown heirs of Hyliard ALLEN deceased," who is thought to have been Gilford's brother. No other record has been found of him. Hyliard was not mentioned in the will of Thomas ALLEN.

11. Oran ALLEN

Among the heirs of Gilford ALLEN in 1876 was Oran ALLEN, who may have been his brother. No other record has been found of him.
