Chapter 3

Johnson Allen

Johnson or Jonathon "John" ALLEN was born in 1799 in South Carolina, according to the 1850 census, and in Mississippi, according to the 1860 census. The names of his parents are not known, but Arthur ALLEN, who fought in the American Revolutionary War from Nash Co., N.C., lived in Darlington Co., S.C., in 1800 and settled in Wayne Co., Miss., by 1830. There may be a family relationship between Arthur and Johnson, but this is only speculation. Johnson married Elmira FLOYD, perhaps not his first wife, sometime before 1837, as the marriage license of Asberry ALLEN, the son of Johnson ALLEN, lists Elmira FLOYD as his mother's maiden name. The death certificate of Elvira ALLEN, born in 1848, the daughter of Johnson ALLEN, lists Elvera ALLEN, as her mother. Elmira (or Elvera) FLOYD ALLEN may have died about 1849, as Johnson married in 1849 or 1850, probably in Buncombe Co., N.C., Mirosu or Myra (maiden name unknown), a white woman. It is also possible that Elmira FLOYD is the same person as Mirosu or Myra. Unfortunately, the courthouse in Buncombe County, where Johnson was living in 1850, burned in 1830, so marriage records before then (if there were any) for Johnson from that county were lost.

Johnson's relationship to Arthur ALLEN of Union Co., Ill., and Joseph ALLEN of Saline Co., Ill., is not known, but it is believed they were related.

Johnson ALLEN is not on the census index of North Carolina or South Carolina for 1830 or 1840. Since there are also no John ALLENs on the 1830 or 1840 census in Buncombe County, he must have been living elsewhere at that time, or if he was living there was not considered the head of a household. There is only one free black named John ALLEN on the 1830 census of North Carolina whose age category fits Johnson ALLEN. He was living in the Southern Regiment, Granville County, N.C., in 1830 and was age 24-36. His wife was Lethia SAUNDERS, the daughter of James and Hannah (MITCHELL) SAUNDERS. (James and Hannah were married in Granville County, as a marriage bond was issued to them during the administration of Gov. Samuel JOHNSTON, 1787-1789, but was not dated.) John and Lethia were married before August 1817, when they were named as heirs of Anson MITCHELL, whose father, Charles MITCHELL, was Hannah's brother, in Granville County court records (pp 211-216). Anson MITCHELL was the son of Charles and Jenney MITCHELL. After Charles's death, Jenney married James DOWNEY. Brothers and sisters of Charles MITCHELL who were also listed in the court records in Granville County in 1817 were: Thomas MITCHELL, Martha wife of William PANNELL, Susannah wife of Elijah MOORE, Mildred wife of Thomas JEFFERIES, John MITCHELL, Elijah MITCHELL deceased (children: Robert MITCHELL, Sally POTTER, Nancy wife of Thomas MITCHELL, Solomon MITCHELL, Betsy MITCHELL, James MITCHELL, and Fanny MITCHELL), Hannah deceased wife of James SAUNDERS (children: Polly wife of James BERRY, Lethia wife of John ALLEN, Nathaniel SAUNDERS, Grandison SAUNDERS, and David SAUNDERS), and Betsy deceased wife of William SAUNDERS (children: Romulus SAUNDERS, Caney wife of Dudley BROWN, Frances SAUNDERS, and Franklin SAUNDERS). One other record of John ALLEN of Granville County is the 5 Mar 1823, deed in which he bought land from Nancy TERRELL of Wake Co., N.C. (Deed Book 2 page 249). It is uncertain if John ALLEN of Granville County is the same person as Johnson ALLEN of Buncombe County, but the information is included here as a clue for future researchers.

According to family tradition, Johnson's wife, Myra ALLEN, was the daughter of a rich tobacco farmer in North Carolina. She is said to have "run off" with one of the "house boys." Her father threatened to sell her children into slavery because of the "shame" she had brought upon the family.

Johnson ALLEN is on the 1850 census of Buncombe Co., N.C., (p 301, household 1414). He was listed as a laborer. His wife's name was recorded as Mirosu (Myra?), born about 1810 in South Carolina. The census taker recorded that they were married within the year. She was listed as white, but Johnson and all his children were recorded as mulattoes. There were four individuals in the household, (Johnson, Mirosu, Lavinia, and Solomon DOCKERY) who were over age 20 and unable to read or write. John ALLEN came to Williamson Co., Ill., in 1852 and is on the 1855 census there.

Myra ALLEN is on the 1860 census of Franklin Co., Ill. (household 196), with Columbus, Jefferson Frances and Elvira. The 1860 census states she was white, illiterate, and born about 1817 in Georgia. The value of her personal property was $10. If the 1850 census of Buncombe Co., N.C., is correct in stating that Myra and Johnson were married within the year, then the children who were living with her were her stepchildren. Myra and Johnson ALLEN must have separated and perhaps divorced between 1850 and 1860, as Johnson was living in Williamson Co., Ill., in 1860. He is on the census there as Jonathon ALLEN (household 1728). Living with him was his daughter, Harriet ALLEN.

Johnson married on 15 Oct 1863, in Saline Co., Ill., Kina COLE. On 6 Nov 1867, he filed for divorce from her in Saline Co., Ill. He stated he had resided in Illinois since 1852 and that after he married Kina, they lived together until 1 Nov 1865, when she deserted him. He claimed that she had "often times committed adultery" and in November 1865 entered an adulterous relationship with Frank JACKSON and eloped with him. Johnson's son, Asberry ALLEN, claimed that he saw JACKSON in his father's house "stripped naked with Kina ALLEN" and shortly afterward they left the county. He claimed that JACKSON was a "lewd character, lazy and indolent."

Frank JACKSON has not been identified, but he could be the same person as Benjamin Franklin JACKSON, the son of James JACKSON, who married in 1877 Ameline Alice ALLEN, the daughter of Henry and Emily BASS ALLEN of Johnson Co., Ill.

John's divorce was granted and he married on 29 Dec 1868, in Saline Co., Ill., Mrs. Amelia ALLEN. Amelia may be the same person as Mrs. Emeline ALLEN who married on 23 Nov 1876, John W. COLE.

The following are children of Johnson ALLEN:

1. ? ALLEN (female) born about 1830, probably in North Carolina, died in 1849-1850, married in 1849 Solomon DOCKERY born about 1829 in Tennessee. He was a laborer and living with Johnson ALLEN in Buncombe Co., N.C., in 1850. There is no proof that Johnson ALLEN had a daughter who married Solomon DOCKERY.

a. William DOCKERY born in 1849 in North Carolina

2. Lavinia ALLEN was born about 1830 in North Carolina

3. James J. ALLEN was born about 1832 in North Carolina and married on 27 May 1860, in Pope Co., Ill., Jetrude (Gertrude) M. TANNER, who was born about 1835 in Tennessee. James's brother, Asberry ALLEN, married Rebecca TANNER, Jetrude's sister.

Jetrude TANNER is on the 1850 census of Pope Co., Ill. (household 223), as born about 1841 in Tennessee. She was the daughter of Jeremiah TANNER, who was born about 1816 in Tennessee and Permelia ELLIS, born about 1817 in Virginia. Other children on the census, beside Jetrude, were: Milton born about 1837, Solender born about 1839, Rebecca born about 1843, John born about 1845, and Mary born in 1850. They were all born in Tennessee, except Mary, who was born in Illinois. They are all recorded as mulattoes on the census.

On 31 Jul 1850, in Pope Co., Ill., Jeremiah TANNER and his wife, Pamelia ELLIS, and their children, Milton P., Tilman H., Gendola (Jetrude?) M., Francis R. (Rebecca?), and John B., were registered as free. Jeremiah and James TANNER entered into a $1,000 bond to ensure that none of the family would become a public charge in Pope County.

James TANNER was on the 1850 census of Pope County (household 686). He was born about 1789 in Virginia and was a farmer, who owned $300 in real estate. His wife, Nancy, was born about 1797 in North Carolina. Also living with him were Parthena, born about 1826 in Tennessee, and Kissin, born about 1842 in Tennessee. They are all recorded as mulattoes.

On 31 Jul 1850, the same day Jeremiah TANNER registered his family as free persons of colour, James TANNER, along with his wife, Nancy, their daughter, Parthena, and their granddaughter, Kissy, we registered as free. James TANNER and Robert LEEPER entered into the required $1,000 bond. James and Nancy were from Stewart Co., Tenn., and their certificate of freedom registered there on 15 Jan 1848, gives the names of their children as Algenina, Parthena, Edward, Willie, Louisa, and Kiziah. (Beverly BROWN, who settled in Union Co., Ill., was also a resident of Stewart Co., Tenn., in the early 1800s.)

James and Gertrude ALLEN are on the 1860 census of Gallatin Co., Ill. (household 210). On the 1870 census of Saline Co., Ill., their personal property was valued at $400 (household 279). They were living next to Irvin ALLEN.

Although the 1870 census records that James owned no land, Zachariah and Mahala TABORN sold 40 acres to James R. ALLEN on 25 Dec 1869. The land was the southwest quarter of the southwest quarter of section 1, township 10 south, range 5 east (Book Q page 311).

a. Sofrona ALLEN was born about 1860 in Illinois.

b. Elmira ALLEN was born about 1863 in Illinois.

c. Limon ALLEN was born about 1865 in Illinois.

In Saline County there is a divorce record of Kate McCUE ALLEN v. Lyman ALLEN for divorce, which was granted 10 Dec 1910, on the grounds of desertion (Divorce Book A page 366).

d. George ALLEN was born about 1868 in Illinois.

e. Milton ALLEN

f. Henry ALLEN--Jewell COFIELD's book, Memories of Lakeview, records the children of James ALLEN as Milton and Henry, but states there could have possibly been more children.

4. Adaline ALLEN was born about 1834 in North Carolina, and married on 30 Apr 1857, in Franklin Co., Ill., John GRAY, who was born about 1820-23 in Illinois. He was previously married to Minerva BIRD and is on the 1850 census of Williamson Co., Ill. (household 197). On the census with him was Emiline GRAY, who was born about 1849 in Tennessee, probably a daughter from his earlier marriage.

Adaline is on the 1850 census as Evaline.

a. Edward O. GRAY born in July 1859 in Illinois

b. William GRAY, who was born about 1863 in Illinois, said on his marriage license that he was the son of Adeline ALLEN. William married on 17 Apr 1884, in Saline Co., Ill., Charlotte A. "Lottie" BLACKWELL, born about 1866, the daughter of Joseph and Mary ANDERSON BLACKWELL.

5. John ALLEN was born about 1835 in North Carolina., married Caladona (maiden name unknown) who was born about 1835 in Kentucky.

John's occupation on the 1850 census in Buncombe Co., N.C., was a laborer and on the 1860 census of Franklin Co., Ill., he was a "farming rentor." In 1860, his personal property was worth $130. The census taker also recorded that he was illiterate.

a. Fidellia ALLEN born about 1857 in Illinois

b. Joseph ALLEN born in Jan 1850 in Illinois

6. Asberry ALLEN was born about 1837 in North Carolina and married Rebecca TANNER on 16 Jul 1860, in Gallatin Co., Ill. Rebecca was born about 1843 in Tennessee, the daughter of Jeremiah and Permelia ELLIS TANNER and is listed with them on the 1850 census of Pope Co., Ill. (household 223). Rebecca's sister, Jetrude, married Asberry's brother, James ALLEN.

Rebecca is not listed with him on the 1860 census of Gallatin Co., Ill., however (household 210). In 1870 (household 285), Asberry was in Saline Co., Ill., with his wife, Lyda Ann ALLEN, who was born about 1852 in Illinois. In 1880 he was in Saline Co., Ill. (household 521). Living with him were his nieces, Mary J. ALLEN, who was born about 1873 in Illinois and Lottie ALLEN, who was born 1879 in Indiana.

There was an Asberry ALLEN who served in the 10th U.S. Colored Troops during the Civil War, but it is not known if this is the same Asberry ALLEN. There was also an Asberry ALLEN, who, according to Saline County Illinois Soldiers of the Civil War by Don BOYD, served in Co. B, 11th New York Infantry, died 8 Mar 1888, and was buried in Lake View Cemetery.

On 25 Mar 1871, Asberry and Lyda sold to Irvin F. ALLEN for $250 the northwest quarter of the southwest quarter of section 1, township 10 south, range 5 east (Deed Book Q page 588).

Asberry married on 2 Jul 1882, in Saline Co., Ill., America A. DABBS who was born about 1863, the daughter of Samuel Ed and Catharine SINGLETON DABBS.

Asberry died about 1895.

a. John L. ALLEN was born about 1863 in Illinois.

b. Pheba J. ALLEN was born about 1869 in Illinois

7. Harriet ALLEN was born about 1838-40 in North Carolina. She apparently had a son out of wedlock by her brother-in-law, John GRAY. She is on the 1860 census twice, with her brother, John ALLEN, in Franklin Co., Ill., and with her father Johnson ALLEN in Williamson Co., Ill.

a. Fidula ALLEN born about 1857 in Illinois.

b. Jasper ALLEN was born in Dec 1859 in Illinois. He stated on his marriage application that he was a farmer and the son of John GRAY and Harriet ALLEN. He married on 28 Dec 1882, in Saline Co., Ill., Mattie WILLIAMS, who was born about 1866 in Tennessee, the daughter of Amos and Marthy SMITH WILLIAMS. Jasper gave the same information about his parents when he married on 31 Jan 1889, at the house of Willis ALLEN in Saline Co., Ill., Ida TRUETT, who was born about 1865 in Kentucky, the daughter of Dan and Charlotte NUNN TRUETT.

8. Columbus C(hristopher?). ALLEN was born about 1838-39 in North Carolina

9. Irvin Frins ALLEN was born 12 Jul 1842, in North Carolina and married on 1 Oct 1863, in Williamson Co., Ill., Ferebey E. OVERTON, who was born 13 Jun 1845, in Illinois, the daughter of Sutton and Permelia MARTIN OVERTON.

There was a Sutton OVERTON who was once the slave of Ransom BETTS in Wayne Co., Mo., but was given his freedom in 1822. Sutton was permitted to reside in Wayne County "so long as he shall be of good behavior and no longer." He moved to Williamson Co., Ill., where he married on 13 Jun 1844, Permelia MARTIN, who was born about 1828 in Virginia. Their children were Ferebey; William, born about 1848; Tempa, born about 1850 (married on 14 Jan 1880, in Jackson Co., Ill., William HAMILTON, who was born about 1854 in Maryland, the son of William and Jane WINTERS HAMILTON); James R., born about 1855 (married on 22 Dec 1878, in Williamson Co., Ill., Charlotte "Lottie" GRAY, the daughter of John and ? JOHNSON GRAY); and Melinda, born about 1857. Sutton purchased a slave named Barton, who in turn purchased his own freedom for $600 on 5 Nov 1853, in Union Co., Ill. OVERTON, once a slave himself, "released from slavery, liberated, manumitted and set free, my negro man Barton, aged 30 years and able to work and gain sufficient livelihood and maintenance."

In 1850, a Union Church was established near Carrier Mills in Saline Co., Ill. Most members were either Baptist or Methodist. An African Methodist Episcopal Church was organized at the home of Irvin ALLEN, who built a one-room log church building on his property. This congregation is now Shaffer Chapel AME Church in Carrier Mills.

Irvin is on the 1860 census of Franklin Co., Ill., in the household of his brother, John ALLEN. His occupation is recorded as "domestic."

Irvin purchased from his brother, Asberry ALLEN, for $250 the northwest quarter of the southwest quarter of section 1, township 10 south, range 5 east (Deed Book Q page 588).

On 2 Sep 1891, in Saline Co., Ill., Irvin filed suit against his brother-in-law, James R. OVERTON and his wife Charlotte, to foreclose a mortgage. Irvin claimed that on 16 Aug 1890, James and Charlotte mortgaged to him for $185.55 the east three-fourths of the northeast quarter of the northeast quarter of section 12, township 10 south, range 5 east, but that none of the debt had been repaid (Chancery box 35).

The 1900 census (household 31) states that Ferebey was then the mother of 18 children of whom nine were living.

Irvin's name is recorded as Erwin ALLEN on the 1908 atlas of Saline Co., Ill. The directory states he was born in 1844 in North Carolina and was a farmer in section 2, township 10 south, range 5 east. He settled in Saline Co., Ill., in 1869 and had previously held the office of school director in Saline County.

Ferebey died 6 Mar 1906, and was buried in Lake View Cemetery. Irvin died 29 Jul 1916, and is also buried there. A marker names the infant children of Ferebey and Irvin, but does not give their birth and death dates. Their children, listed below, may not be listed in order of birth.

Irvin ALLEN may have remarried after the death of Ferebey, as there is a divorce case in Saline Co., Ill., of Ervin ALLEN v. Elizabeth ALLEN of Pulaski Co., Ill. The divorce was granted 18 Sep 1911, on grounds of desertion (Chancery Book A page 393).
